The existing UWA Academic Skills Centre Assignment Date Calculator (https://www.resources.uwa.edu.au/assignment-calculator/) provides a simple interface that allows students to enter the start and end dates of a single assignment and provides a plan by breaking down a writing task (e.g. an essay or report) into steps. This calculator has been online since 2012, and while some students still find it useful, the UI has become outdated, and the capabilities are limited. This project aims to provide UWA students with an improved online assignment planning tool that incorporates up-to-date science of learning and pedagogical approaches, and a more interactive and engaging user interface. The tool should allow students to enter information for multiple assessments (of different types) across the semester, and receive a customised plan based on information such as: assignment release and due dates, test and exam dates, assignment types, and anticipated student availability, and will ideally have capability to scrape information from unit handbooks and/or outlines. There is also potential to extend this project to include features such as: calendar/to-do list integration (Outlook), class timetable integration, or additional study planning including revision activities. The interface should be simple to use and compatible with accessibility tools, and the assignment/study plan should be presented in multiple formats, both visual and text-based, to make it accessible to all students. As such, we are particularly interested in a team that includes students with an interest in web accessibility. Academic Skills Centre staff will provide expertise around how the assignment plans should be structured, the content/resources, and knowledge of accessibility requirements; the student project team will provide the technical skills to implement it. However, in addition to technical skills, we believe that a student team will bring valuable insights to the project, as they will be able to empathise with the end-user in a way that others cannot.

An electronic prescription is a digital version of a paper prescription. Since the introduction of this process in May 2020, the Australian healthcare system has seen an uptake with over 189 million electronic prescriptions issued, more than 80000 prescribers adopting electronic prescribing and at least 98% of all PBS-approved pharmacies having dispensed medications from electronic prescriptions. With efforts underway to expand electronic prescribing in hospitals and aged care settings, the next generation of healthcare requires proficient education and training in this area. For further information about How to get an Electronic prescription, please view this link: https://www.digitalhealth.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/electronic-prescriptions We, the Pharmacy department at School of Health and Clinical Sciences propose a simulation of part of the dispense process which involves the scanning of a QR code (token presented by patient) thereby transposing patient details into a copy of an electronic prescription (patient’s prescription which the doctor has written). These details are then entered into a dispensing system by a pharmacist manually. We have examples of what a screenshot would look like on a patient's phone and the resulting information that would display on the computer once the QR code is scanned. We will require the simulation program to be editable by the Pharmacy Department for future educational purposes.

Human mobility is key to poverty reduction and shared global prosperity. With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the international community recognized the contribution that migration makes to global welfare. The Agenda’s guiding principle, “Leave no one behind,” is a call to ensure that marginalized populations remain at the forefront of sustainable development efforts. The Sustainable Development Goals therefore include targets relevant for both international and domestic migration, and emphasize the importance of well-managed migration policies and urban planning efforts. A government’s ability to plan and implement responsible migration policies hinges upon access to accurate data and robust modelling. Existing databases of regional populations and internal and international migration flows do not fill this need, as they are coarse-grained and limited in their geographical and temporal coverage. These limitations further prevent analyses of climate-induced demographic change, particularly in less-developed parts of the globe. Despite the current sense of urgency, we know not how many climate-induced migrants will move, where they will move to, nor when. Dr Parsons, working since 2022, has been diligently collating the universe of relevant primary census documents in order to meet these challenges head-on. Once assembled these data will constitute nothing short of a paradigm shift in mankind’s understanding of human mobility and most pertinently, will facilitate the first meaningful analyses of the links between climate change and human mobility since our data should feed directly into the IPCC modelling. A team is being sought to develop software, likely based on Mistral's latest offering, in order to be able to read our PDF tables into an electronic format so as to facilitate pioneering analyses of these data.

Grouping large numbers of samples into meaningful groups can be a complex task, but it is fundamental to many fields of research and applied science. Rather than grouping by derived parameters such as the mean, standard deviation, skewness etc, by far the best and most meaningful results come from using the whole Particle Size Distribution (PSD). Examples include the range of particle sizes in powders used to make paint or concrete, or in natural sediments in rivers and on the sea bed. In the natural environment, it is a common need for researchers and in the consultancy sector to assess the direction of sediment movement. This might relate to tracking pollutants or assessing the sediment transport patterns relevant to coastal erosion. The sediments themselves are the best source of information, and grouping and sorting different samples can greatly enhance the identification of key sediment transport pathways. A 1995 study by Woolfe and Michibayashi (refer https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0098300494000929) introduced a DOS-based program named ENTROPY, later updated into a VisualBasic program “EntropyMax”. These programs classify high-resolution sediment PSD data obtained from laser-diffraction instruments such as the Malvern Mastersizer (Mastersizer | Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzers | Malvern Panalytical). The programs apply Entropy Analysis to group a large number of individual samples based on their complete Particle Size Distributions (PSD). Assessing the optimal number of groupings is aided with metrics such as the ‘percent explained’ parameter (Rs statistic) and inequality measures (other examples include see also https://doi.org/10.1080/00288306.1995.9514653; https://doi.org/10.1046/j.1440-0952.2000.00782.x). However, ultimately, the most appropriate groupings are determined by the user, based on expert judgement and their specific needs. At present, making these assessments takes a great deal of data manipulation using Excel and plotting many sets of results onto maps for comparison. It is incredibly laborious and time-consuming, and mistakes are common. This project invites computer science students to develop a modern and user-friendly version of the decades-old program EntropyMax. Key updates would include: • Automation of the optimal grouping process. NB - The original Visual Basic code can be provided. Python or similar is likely to might provide a far more efficient programming tool for the computational process itself. • Improved graphical output of the groupings and individual particle size distribution curves. • Integration with the spatial data, e.g., so a set of results can be chosen based on their true locations and viewed easily on screen. • Export of results, e.g., as KMZ files for viewing in Google Earth, and in other forms. Such an updated version would increase accessibility and interoperability and reduce mistakes, making this powerful classification tool available to a new generation of geoscientists and environmental scientists working with large, high-resolution datasets. Students would be provided with a novel and real dataset from the seabed of NW Australia, with the potential for co-authored publication of results.

Project aim: Develop an AI-powered browser extension to filter online content recommendations, reducing exposure to addictive or polarizing material, with a transparent user dashboard for interpretability. Project description: Online platform algorithms, while boosting engagement, can create echo chambers or expose users to problematic content. This project will use the psychological principle of "allostatic regulation" (based on our recent research article - https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/29974100.2025.2517191) to create a client-side browser extension for regulating online content. This prototype will intercept and modify content recommendations on a target platform (e.g., YouTube), using AI/machine learning to identify and suppress addictive or polarizing content. It will also provide a user dashboard, offering customization and transparent visualizations of the filtering decisions made by the content blocker. The Python code for allostatic regulation is already available in the cited article above; the challenge lies in integrating this algorithm with an appropriate machine learning technique to create a functional browser extension. Project tasks: - Browser extension development: Build the extension core using preferred tools (e.g., HTML/CSS/Javascript, or similar); implement DOM manipulation to filter recommendations on a target platform such as YouTube. - AI-powered filtering algorithm: Select and integrate appropriate machine learning techniques (e.g., text classification, LLMs) to identify problematic content from metadata. - User dashboard: Design user interface for settings; create visualizations demonstrating allostatic regulation in real time, and what filtering decisions are made by the extension. - Proof-of-concept: Test functionality within the prototype.

Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) is the accrediting body for Exercise Scientists, Exercise Physiologists, and Sport Scientists. As part of their university accreditation academic requirements, students must complete up to 500 hours of placement across various sites. Following each placement, students are required to submit a Record of Student Engagement (RSE), which includes a summary of their experience, activities undertaken, and personal reflections. These reports are subject to random audits by ESSA. ESSA enforces strict guidelines regarding scope of practice, particularly in the language used within RSEs. For instance, terms like "diagnosis" or acronyms such as "6MWT" or "TUG" are prohibited. Currently, academic staff manually review and provide feedback on these reports, which is a time-consuming and iterative process. To streamline this workflow, we propose an AI-powered platform that allows students to submit their RSEs for an initial review. The system would automatically identify and flag potential issues—such as inappropriate terminology or formatting errors—based on a set of predefined common mistakes. Over time, the platform would improve its accuracy and feedback quality through machine learning. With this first-level automated check, students can revise their reports before submitting the final version to academic staff for formal assessment and grading.

The rising burden of diabetes in Nepal and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) presents a major public health challenge. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions present an innovative approach to enhancing diabetes self-management and improving access to healthcare in LMICs, though the evidence to date has been inconsistent. A recent scoping review identified the types of mHealth interventions for diabetes management in LMICs, and key barriers and facilitators influencing implementation. It recommended the development of user-centred approaches, which support digital literacy and integrate with existing health systems. This pilot project will develop a basic mHealth application for type 2 diabetes management, with a focus on improving glycaemic control, medication adherence and digital literacy. It is anticipated the application will be trialled in a sample population in Nepal, prior to amending and trialling in a larger sample. To be suitable for a remote low-income context the application must be cross (mobile) platform, low resource (data, storage, and compute) usage, and usable offline.

This project proposes the design and implementation of Botanic Guide, a tablet and desktop application designed to support staff managing the botanical garden under development in Yanchep, Western Australia. The app will be primarily used by the garden manager and field staff to capture, view, and update records relevant to planting activities, seed suppliers, plant breeding trials, and other operational data. The application will provide streamlined access to a complex relational dataset. The initial release of the database may be implemented in Microsoft Access, but a PostgreSQL version, packaged in a Docker container, is expected to follow shortly for ongoing development and deployment. Objectives The project aims to build a cross-platform application using Flutter, targeting iPad, Android tablets, and desktop systems (Windows, macOS, and Linux). The backend will be developed using FastAPI, serving as a lightweight and maintainable interface that connects directly to the database. The app will feature a simple, robust user interface that accommodates both data entry in the field and reporting needs in the office. It will also incorporate access control and identity management via AWS Cognito, enabling secure user authentication and role-based access. Key Features Botanic Guide will include functionality for capturing new user records, seed suppliers, seed lots, and planting data, as well as records for a plant breeding programme in collaboration with Kings Park. Users will be able to update all records and manage associated lookup tables, including taxonomy (family, genus, species), planting zones, and user roles. The app will also support flexible reporting on all data tables with configurable selection parameters. The user interface will prioritise clarity, responsiveness, and ease of use for staff working in varied environments. Technology Stack The frontend will be developed using Flutter, enabling deployment on tablets and desktop platforms. The backend will be built with FastAPI, exposing secure REST endpoints to interact with the database. User authentication and role management will be handled via AWS Cognito, allowing integration with Amplify for future scalability if needed. Version control and collaboration will be managed through GitHub, with CI/CD and testing pipelines considered as part of the development process. Testing will include both unit tests and usability testing in real-world field conditions.

We propose the development of the ABCDFU Decision-Support Tool, a concise, clinician-facing application designed to support comprehensive risk assessment and management of patients with chronic and complex conditions. The tool summarises best-practice care across six key domains: A (albuminuria and renal function), B (blood pressure), C (cholesterol), D (diabetes), F (food and lifestyle), and U (ulcer care). By integrating real-time clinical data from electronic medical records, the tool will prompt clinicians with visual cues and evidence-based recommendations during routine consultations, thereby supporting guideline adherence and holistic care delivery. The ABCDFU tool is designed to be simple, actionable, and seamlessly integrated into existing workflows. It addresses key barriers to optimal chronic disease management, such as time constraints and fragmented data, by consolidating critical risk factors into a single, intuitive interface. In doing so, it aims to enhance clinical decision-making, reduce care variability, and improve patient outcomes, particularly in high-risk populations such as those with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We anticipate that the tool will not only streamline clinical processes but also serve as a foundation for quality improvement and education across care teams.

A team is being sought to develop software/an AI agent, to be able to systematically locate: primary census documents currently omitted from our collection (from a range of inputs), methodically store the files found (in a range of formats), identify the physical location of the documents scattered across libraries worldwide and to collate metadata pertaining to them, such that those documents can be readily obtained in the near future should they not be directly accessible. The aim of this project is to develop an app that measures the mental load. Background: The mental load (or mental labour) refers to thinking work performed to achieve goals that benefit others (e.g., planning meetings or deciding what to cook for dinner). Research has consistently shown that in the home, the mental load is disproportionately shouldered by women, and our research suggests that this same trend also happens at work. Although the popular press suggest the mental load is a bad thing, emerging research suggests it has both positive and negative outcomes. Project: We want to develop a mobile app (iOS and Android) that measures the mental load at home and work, and provides users with insights on their mental load. Ideally, we could use this to collect data for research to keep exploring the mental load but it could also function as an intervention for users to help manage their own mental load via infographics and visual displays. Last year, a CITS3200 team developed a prototype of this app that was linked to the survey platform Qualtrics. We would now like to get it "app store ready" and add some additional features (e.g., add friends to visualise their mental load). While students are taught how to upload these documents, many forget to update them before they expire (e.g. annually or every 3 years), leading to non-compliance and increased administrative burden. This project proposes the design and development of ‘STARS’ a user-friendly mobile/web app that helps undergraduate nursing students manage and track their placement compliance efficiently. An important part of building AI solutions is to perform evaluations of the solution to ensure the model outputs meet the type and content criteria that you specify, and that the solution is reliable for the purpose for which it was created. Evaluating the outcomes produced by AI solutions is often time-consuming, labour-intensive, and highly subjective. As organisations adopt LLM-based tools (e.g. Copilot Studio agents, custom GPT applications), there is a growing need for systematic, scalable, and consistent evaluation methods.
This project involves designing and building an AI agent that offers significant time savings by automating evaluation process by analysing the provided solution details including documentation, specifications and user stories to identify key functionalities, edge cases and evaluation criteria.
The agent will generate targeted test scenarios based on the intended behaviour of the AI solution, execute those tests, and produce structured evaluation reports. This approach streamlines validation process, reduces reliance on manual review, and enable more consistent, objective, and evidence-based assessments.

This WebApp is basically what is used to scedule jobs for workers in coffee shops, but applied to facilitators teaching classes. It needs to take into account skills of the person and their availability, and the needs to consider the class being taught, number of repeats, skills required, when run, clashes etc... An AWS portal will be setup and the outcome needs to be a deployed WebApp (including ability to email users for accoutn setup/password reset). Features such as the abilty to chat and for workers to change shifts with others are prefered options... The primary challenge with the app is to sort ALL facilitators, roles and their availabilities with the activities being run, trying to OPTIMIZE under a set of conditions including (which can be switched on or off or weighted for EACH activity) 1) Assign experience facilitators to early in the week 2) Assign a minimum of X different facilitators to an activity ( to provide back up for activities should someone become sick) OPTIMIZATION should run and provided first pass analysis. ADMIN should be able to manually (drag and drop ideally) facilitators to timeslots and activities, and select (bypassing optimization) so that the change is held - Optimization should then be allowed to run again on the modified dataset. A list of inconsistencies should be reported and how close optimization was to 100%. Inconsistencies include: • Not enough facilitators • Not enough LEAD facilitators • X person with too many hour (or too few hours) At this stage only 1 Group working on the project is desired

Such a move is necessary and important to increase the publicity of research output and potentially attract more public attention. However, across universities, webpages are arranged differently, creating difficulties for comparisons in research productivity across universities. This potentially affects public awareness of research quality. The goal of the project is to produce a tool that can collect publication information from Australian G8 universities, say, in the "Accounting/Finance" field and, based on a ranking list, to classify these publications, summarize all researchers' productivity, and make comparisons across universities. Minimum goal: Input - information from various webpages: 1) corresponding webpages of individual researchers in Accounting/Finance in all G8 universities; 2) ABDC journal ranking information: https://abdc.edu.au/abdc-journal-quality-list/ Output - a webpage to display individuals' numbers of publications in A*-, A-, B- and other categories, and it allows users to download the information as an Excel spreadsheet. On the webpage, for each individual researcher, there are hyperlinks to display a table of journal names, number of publications, year, keywords, etc. Medium-level goal: Output - dashboard for individual researchers' output based on various rankings. Apart from the ABDC list (in the minimum goal), use other journal rankings such as H-index, Journal Impact Factor, Clarivate. Beyond: Add more visualization tools that display the productivity of individual researchers; Provide summaries at the university level; Expand the field into other subjects such as Engineering, Computer Science, etc.

We propose the development of a participant-focused mobile application to support engagement, communication, and access to information throughout The PERTH Trial. The PERTH Trial, working out of the Harry Perkins Institute, is running RCT's, investigating the reduction of plastic associated chemicals on the health of humans. This app will serve as a centralised platform where participants can view key trial information, including their personalised calendar with upcoming appointments and sample collection dates. Automated text reminders will prompt timely attendance and sample submissions, while a “click to confirm” function will allow participants to easily confirm appointments and communicate with the research team. The app will also provide directions and parking information, helping to reduce barriers to participation and people getting lost at QEII, which has been feedback from previous studies. To further support trial activities, the app will include a secure messaging feature for two-way communication with the trial team, a built-in camera function to upload relevant images and clear, accessible instructions for completing sample collections. Crucially, participants will also be able to complete required trial surveys directly within the app through an integrated survey module (e.g. REDCap). This will streamline data collection, reduce reliance on external platforms and save participants scrolling through emails. By placing all essential trial tools in one user-friendly application, this solution will improve participant experience, promote adherence, reduce researcher burden and enhance the overall efficiency and integrity of the trial.

Students enrolled in a higher degree by research are a diverse group of students who can be enrolled in a PhD or a Masters, enrol at any time of the year, can move between full-time and part-time enrolment, may suspend their studies, take up to four weeks of annual leave per year, and can be located off campus. Some may be interested in support for neurodiversity and/or wellbeing. We currently send reminders to all students about upcoming research training events, resources and support but we do not tailor these messages to the specific requirements of each student. Communicating with research students would ideally take into account their specific needs as defined by course (PhD or Masters), stage of candidature (time from enrolment – that can take into account periods of leave and suspension), FT/PT status, location (on campus or not) and optional information about neurodiversity and/or wellbeing. We would like to develop an app where students input these parameters and communications are sent to them accordingly. We have mapped a program of messages for the first year of full-time on-campus doctoral candidates (including potential images). This map could be adapted to all other permutations of candidature.

The aim of this project is to develop an intelligent agentic AI system capable of generating comprehensive technical architecture diagrams tailored for cloud environments, specifically AWS and Azure. This tool will automate the creation of detailed infrastructure layouts and provide accurate monthly cost estimations for setting up these environments. The solution will accelerate Cloud Engineers and other IT professionals in creating architecture diagrams.
The solution should provide a chat interface and ask the user questions on what their intended architecture looks like (e.g., “3-tier app on AWS with auto-scaling and RDS”). The user should only chat with one orchestrator agent, which manages the entire workflow and coordinates the other agents. A design agent will specify the components and overall design of the solution. Subsequent agents will access available resources and pricing information from AWS and Azure documentation / SDKs. They will also generate the diagrams – ideally via a consistent code-based solution. The solution should offer the capability to export these diagrams into an editable industry standard format, with a preference for PowerPoint (PPT) compatibility.
Users will benefit from a seamless experience where they can visualise their cloud setups and understand the associated costs without manual intervention. The tool will cater to IT professionals and decision-makers seeking efficient planning and budgeting solutions. By automating the diagramming and cost estimation process, this agent will enhance productivity, reduce planning time, and facilitate informed decision-making for cloud infrastructure deployment. The flexibility to edit exported diagrams ensures adaptability to specific organisational needs, making this tool a valuable asset in strategic cloud management and design.

We are seeking the development of a program to help automate the processing of dietary data from the PERTH Trial. The Plastic Exposure Reduction Transforms Health (PERTH) Trial is researching if reducing our exposure to plastics could transform human health. The PERTH Trial is located at the Harry Perkins Institute (North) under the UWA medical school. The goal is to build a "diet-plastics matrix" that estimates plastic exposure from food intake over a 24-hour period. The data, provided in Excel (CSV) format, includes details about food items, food groups, packaging, storage, preparation, and each eating occasion (e.g. each meal, snack or drinking occasion). There are 280 dietary records in total, including data from 40 participants with one visit and 60 participants with four visits each. For every visit, the program should generate a matrix for each eating occasion. Each matrix will group food items into standard food groups and calculate the serve size for each group. Serve size and food characteristics information is supplied by Research Dietitians. The matrix will score each food group based on whether it had plastic touchpoints (e.g. packaged, stored, cooked, or served in plastic). Other plastic touchpoints include whether the food was microwaved, frozen, or prepared outside the home (e.g. from a café). Characteristics such as whether foods are fatty, acidic, alcoholic, aqueous, or ultra-processed will also be scored if food items in the food group had plastic touchpoints.

Human mobility is key to poverty reduction and shared global prosperity. With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the international community recognized the contribution that migration makes to global welfare. The Agenda’s guiding principle, “Leave no one behind,” is a call to ensure that marginalized populations remain at the forefront of sustainable development efforts. The Sustainable Development Goals therefore include targets relevant for both international and domestic migration, and emphasize the importance of well-managed migration policies and urban planning efforts. A government’s ability to plan and implement responsible migration policies hinges upon access to accurate data and robust modelling. Existing databases of regional populations and internal and international migration flows do not fill this need, as they are coarse-grained and limited in their geographical and temporal coverage. These limitations further prevent analyses of climate-induced demographic change, particularly in less-developed parts of the globe. Despite the current sense of urgency, we know not how many climate-induced migrants will move, where they will move to, nor when. Dr Parsons, working since 2022, has been diligently collating the universe of relevant primary census documents in order to meet these challenges head-on. Once assembled these data will constitute nothing short of a paradigm shift in mankind’s understanding of human mobility and most pertinently, will facilitate the first meaningful analyses of the links between climate change and human mobility, not least since our data should feed directly into the ICCP modelling. A team is being sought to develop software, to be able to convert national maps – often found in the census documents themselves – into an electronic format (i.e. shapefiles) and concurrently to geo-reference the maps. This task is pivotal to the overarching project’s success, without which we will be unable to harmonise our census geographies over space and time.
