Renee and Ben are third year medical students researching the risk factors for development of DKA. They intend to create a web-based mobile application for Diabetics, aimed at reducing overall incidence and morbidity of DKA. Their research focuses on identifying the risk factors for development of DKA with the goal of creating a risk prediction model to predict the risk of DKA occurrence. They aim to utilise their findings to create a go-to functional application that Diabetics can use daily to track their glucose levels, along with a built-in risk prediction calculator which predicts the risk of development of DKA when users are unwell.
This project is supervised by Professor Charles Inderjeeth and Dr Seng Khee Gan. It is also supported by the Australia Centre of Accelerating Diabetes Innovation (ACADI) Health Technology Innovation Seed-Funding Grant, which can be utilised to aid in application development (https://medicine.unimelb.edu.au/research/acadi/training-opportunities/acadi-healthtech-innovation-challenge). The final application may be trialled by a group of Diabetics to evaluate its accuracy in predicting DKA hand overall usability and potentially utilised in future research publications.
