A Map and an App: Commemorative Plaques on Campus

The University of Western Australia follows the tradition of commemorative plaques placed on buildings and monuments to remind us of significant people and events in the Universitys past. Plaques around the Crawley campus celebrate the Universitys founders, benefactors and significant members of staff. They also celebrate events such as the laying of a Foundation Stone, the opening or repurposing of a building, or a visit by the Queen. Plaques can be on or near buildings, pavements, sculptures, objects and trees.

The University has need of a comprehensive inventory / central record of these plaques and their location. It will also provide an easy way for interested members of the University community and the general public to know about them and visit them. They may even find the trace of an ancestor with this information.

The volunteers of the UWA Historical Society (UWAHS) have a list of many of the locations of these plaques and this work is continuing with sources from Guild, Convocation and Friends Groups. The constructed database will include details of each plaque, its GPS location and images. We will work with students to provide images, further information and data as needed. Students will have access to GPS identification equipment (on loan from Winthrop Prof Marc Tennant).

We look forward to this year's project to create a map and an app so others can find what we have found.
