Creating a mobile application to share laboratory resources and skills

Laboratory science can be incredibly wasteful. As we move as a community towards valuing better resource management and reducing waste, research laboratories have been left behind. Nevertheless, many researchers are interested in improving resource management. We propose that a mobile app could be developed for sharing of resources and expertise. Membership could be tiered in several ways - eg. university-wide, campus-wide, institute-wide, group-wide and team-wide. Similar to the ethos of the 'Buy Nothing' groups on Facebook, members could post anything research-related that they would like to give away, lend, or share amongst fellow researchers. For example, at the end of a project, equipment or reagents can be given away rather than discarded. Members can also ask for anything they would like to receive for free or borrow, including know-how or time. No selling, bartering or trading - it's a gift economy. No soliciting for jobs, no self-promotion. I envisage members signing up for specific groups/notifications that may be related to location, or to the types of reagents and expertise they have available. This would build a sharing community and may even lead to collaborations.
