A Web Application for Collaborative Ontology Visualisations

Ontologies are a data description technique to represent concepts in a domain and the relationships between those concepts. Using ontologies increases the richness of data and allows data to be represented in a standard way across an organisation. They are also used as the backbone of many natural language applications such as Siri.

Building an effective ontology requires huge amounts of collaboration. Groups such as the Industrial Ontology Foundry (IOF) consists of individuals from all around the world who come together to work on industrial ontologies. However, there is currently no standard way to visualise ontologies and there is no online collaborative tool to create ontological diagrams in the design phase.

This project will involve designing and developing a web application that can be used to collaboratively create ontology diagrams. This will be similar to something like Lucid Chart (https://www.lucidchart.com/) but tailored for collaborative ontological diagramming. A number of ontologies are available for use as examples in the project. Therefore, the focus of this project will be on the web application rather than writing or building ontologies.
