Business Impact Analysis Tool

To assist Campus Management, Faculties/Schools and researchers themselves to manage responses to incidents such as power outage or chilled water system, it is imperative that individual research projects have well developed response or Business Continuity Plans (BCPs). These plans outline the actions (and other info) required to recover, resume, restore or relocate their priority activities to reduce losses and enable them to resume their activities promptly.

The issue is that many Researchers do not consider that whilst the university will always try to restore services ASAP, it will still take time and this may greatly impact the research being undertaken.

I propose the development of a system that gathers the data to be used to assist in the development of complex response plans. For instance we have various temperature controlled environments that cannot be duplicated easily and may involve the welfare of animals - knowing in advance what actions are required and when can reduce losses and possibly years of research. To do this though, it is imperative that information is gathered on the activities and their dependencies. The data can then be used to plan and document strategic response plans.

As we are a research university, there is a very large variety of activities underway at any one time, and these change every year if not earlier. The loss of IT network connectivity, mains water supply and electrical outages over the last several years reflect the importance of BCPs. They are for when (not If) things go wrong. There is nothing available for researchers or the faculties themselves that collects and maintains the types of data we need to produce useable and individualised BCPs.
