Mother and Baby Unit clinical/research Database
The Mother and Baby Unit is an 8 bedded ward at King Edward Memorial Hospital. The research team have set up a database using excel with multiple data handling and manual data entry. The data base currently contains 100,000 pieces of data and is rapidly expanding with new patients at a rate of 150 per year and the needs of Masters and PhD students and other research staff.
The data is made up from various sources and includes basic demographics, medical, personal and social histories, results of psychological assessments etc.
The aim of the project is to move the database to a platform allowing touch screen entry by both staff and patients who may be computer illiterate. The front entry therefore needs to be very easily negotiable. The back entry of the database needs to remain secure and accessible only by chosen researchers. The data would stored in a form allowing easy transfer to statistical analysis program. Researchers would also need to run queries directly from the primary computer based data storage (eg Access)
The aim is to have one stand alone computer/touch screen (not inter or intranet linked) and the database backup by data transfer regularly.
