The ISO/OSI Reference Model - layer-upon-layer
1. The Physical Layer is responsible for transmitting a (raw) bit stream over the physical communication medium. As such it is concerned with the electrical and mechanical interface between the data and the physical medium.
The physical layer presents a bit stream to the layer above.
