Mobile application to take the bite out of food waste

Food waste in Australia is a major problem, costing the economy around $40B a year and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, food insecurity is an issue for many Australians. Interestingly, 70% of food that is wasted is edible.

ReFood is an initiative that aims to channel food from areas of excess to areas in need in a more efficient manner. Operating via a mobile phone application, ReFood allows food businesses who are willing and able to provide excess and fit for consumption food to connect directly with not-for-profit (NFP) organisations in their local community who provide food relief. NFP representatives are able to claim and collect donations in their local areas in a timely fashion. We have previously developed and tested a preliminary ReFood mobile phone application which operates as this Food Sharing Network, and now have good feedback to make a new and improved application.

The aim of this project is to build an improved, web-based phone application that better meets the needs of both food donors and collectors, allowing for the following: Easy uploading of food details for food businesses to inform NFP representatives of a food donation Auto-notification of collectors when location is matched, or a donation meets pre-defined criteria Ability of collectors to claim donations via the app Flexibility to change food donation details after posting Ability to record all donations to allow businesses to generate donation reports

You will be provided with the extensive background work on this project including code for the preliminary app.
