A Web Database Accessible via Mobile Devices for Chemical Inventory Management

The Chemical Engineering Department at UWA maintains an array of laboratories on both the Crawley Campus and Technology Park located in Kensington. These labs contain many chemical storage cabinets for a variety of flammable liquids, corrosives and toxic compounds. Currently lacking is a comprehensive system to identify the locations and contents of these cabinets. Further, no centralised reference system exists to ascertain which chemicals can safely be stored together. This project will see the creation of a multi-component system to fix the problem described above. It will consist of: i) a web-based database to which a comprehensive inventory of stored substances can be uploaded, including critical information on volumes, hazards and compatibility; ii) a web-based application usable on mobile devices linked to this database which will allow for on-the-fly access to information on, for example, the location of specific substances and; iii) integration with a location specific QR code style system for individual chemical cabinets to improve accessibility. The project will be subject to Creative Commons IP to enable further development in future. It will be jointly supervised by Drs Bruce Norris, Brendan Graham and Chris McDonald.
