Interactive display of wave data for ocean renewable energy development/research

The consistent, highly energetic ocean waves around the South-West region of our State are internationally unparalleled and promise a novel source of clean, renewable energy. The UWA campuses in Perth and Albany are superbly placed to champion research in ocean renewable energy across disciplines, such as physical oceanography and hydrodynamics. Field data and research outputs inform the growing offshore renewable energy industry sector with regard to the placement, performance and survivability of energy converting technology in the water. The UWA Wave Energy Research Centre (WERC) is State Government funded and has a mandate to make Common User Resources available to industry and attract interest in deployments in the South-West region. Based on recent work by WERC research students, we are proposing a project to assist and advance these conversations by bridging the gap between academic publication and industry-ready usability of wave data.

We would like to have a web app which processes historical and real-time wave buoy data from wave buoys in the Albany region, into statistical data. A wave measuring buoy records its displacements in waves as a function of time. These data are not very useful in their raw form, but can be condensed into various statistical quantities which are very useful especially for wave energy device developers and other potential users. Outputs will be various statistical information such as probability distributions of wave heights, periods, directions, surface currents, and wave power levels, including monthly and seasonal trends, which will all be displayed graphically, and the underlying data can be downloaded by potential users. This will be integrated on the WERC website (https://marineresearch-gs.com/wave-energy-research-centre/).
