Drug Flash

Master of Pharmacy students at UWA complete their postgraduate degree in 6 trimesters over 2 years to graduate to work as intern pharmacists in community or hospital environments. In this intensive degree students are required to demonstrate an ability to apply their knowledge about health and medicines to optimise the quality of life of patients. Do achieve this students must learn in detail about 150 drugs, and in less detail about hundreds of others. There is no avoiding the process of rote learning about drugs.

The Drug Flash project aims to develop a study tool that helps pharmacy students to learn the drug information they require to succeed in the course. The information students must learn for each of these 150 or so core drugs includes: drug class; major indications; usual adult dose; key counselling points; adverse effects; monitoring requirements; interactions; and special considerations. Ideally, the app will provide `flash cards' of the core drugs for each of these areas and be grouped so that students can select the drugs that are relevant to their stage of the degree.

The information in the app will need to be able to be updated to maintain relevance to current practice.

Successful completion of the project will result in the incorporation of the application into the Master of Pharmacy curriculum from 2019.
