Surgical Instruments Educational App
Surgical instruments are crucial parts of every surgery. Each surgical instrument should be specifically used for a certain purpose otherwise it can be harmful to patients. Surgical instruments are also very expensive and often very delicate. Therefore, improper use of them can easily incur heavy costs to users. During my teaching sessions in Surgical Instrumentation, I have noticed that students need a lot of practice to memorise each instrument's name, shape, abilities/limitations, categorisation, and method of use. However, they have no access to these instruments outside the classroom.
The aim of developing The Surgical Instruments Educational software is to provide a simple and well-designed teaching environment for undergraduate students who wish to improve their skills in surgical instrumentation. For the best result, I think this software should be prepared as a mobile App. Although there are an enormous number of surgical instruments, the aim of this software is to teach a specific number of "General Surgical Instruments", which are routinely used in almost every surgery. When the software is launched, it should show a menu of five options:
- Instruments
By clicking on the "Instruments" menu option, a categorised list of instruments (such as Scalpels, Scissors, Needle holders, etc.) should be shown. Then by clicking on each category, the software should show a list of instruments in that category. For example, if one selects the "Scissors" category, in the next page he/she should see a list of surgical scissors, i.e. Metzenbaum Scissors, Mayo Scissors, Iris Scissors, etc. Then by clicking on each instrument, the software should show a page of information regarding that specific instrument. I name this page as "DATA PAGE". The "Data page" contains several "DATA FIELDS". Each "Data Field" is a specific kind of information for each instrument. It could be the name of the instrument, photo of the instrument, photo of how to use the instruments, and a brief text describing the instrument.
- Practice
By clicking on the "Practice" menu option, user can select which category of instruments and which "data field" he/she likes to practice. Then the software should show the relevant information in a scheduled time.
- Quiz
By clicking on "Quiz", the software should randomly show a "Data Page" but omit at least one DATA FIELD. Therefore, the user can think about the omitted field. The Quiz option can be developed more interactive depending on the willingness of the programmers.
- My Collection
By clicking on "My Collection", the user should be able to take photos of real instruments and save the photos. For example, a student can take a photo of Mayo Scissors in lab and save this photo as "Mayo Scissors". Taking photos of instruments will help the student to review the instruments he/she has actually seen in the lab, before seating in the practical exam.
- Instrument Sets
"Instrument Sets" menu option should show a list of the general instruments required for a routine surgical pack. Name of each instrument in this list should be linked to the relevant Data Page of that instrument.
I can provide the required data regarding instruments, categorisation, photos, etc. My friend who is a graphic designer is interested in designing any required logo, software buttons, animations, etc. for this software. Students will have a crucial role in giving life to this project.
