Say it all: App/tool Comparing Social Determinants of Health for Gen Y Living or Working FIFO

Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) employment is a significant way of life in Australia. The UWA FIFO Pregnancy Study gathers knowledge to improve antenatal and postnatal health care for two groups of women: pregnant women with partners working FIFO and pregnant women working FIFO themselves. The purpose of this computing project is to add value to this world first research study in the context of FIFO. Say It All is envisaged to be a highly useable App or tool to promote mental health for pregnant women, new Mums and their partners starting with the FIFO community with potential in the general community by measuring and showing women (and men) in the FIFO community how successfully they are coping individually and in comparison to others.

Ideally the Group will create software based on the questions used in FIFO Pregnancy Study to suit mobile devices where the App can be shared via Facebook. At least three benefits are expected for the App user: (i) those who get optimal scores will feel good knowing their mental health and support mechanisms are working well; (ii) those who get less optimal scores will be encouraged and supported with strategies and links to suggestions that other FIFO people have used; (iii) those who get average score will be shown how well they are performing. Ideally, links from each of the score categories to existing community social support and mental health resources would; individual scores could be comparable to other "players" and there will be score comparisons with other types of workers. If there is a way for the survey questions to be presented using a game based approach that would be perfect! Discussing Say It All scores has the potential to encourage conversations that increase awareness of social support, emotional health and promote the community connections that support mentally health populations - all in a fun way.

A suitable but less exciting, non-game educative approach is Take-the-Test. However; the "Baby Boomer" researcher has a preference for the game based approach and will be guided by the Group with regard to maximising the appeal of the App for Gen Y users. We are keen to work closely with the Group to create a mental health tool that is useful and relevant for women and men; desirable to use/play in everyday life, can measure progress and setbacks, develop resilience, compare scores among friends and possibly share the scientifically validated score with medical providers if necessary.
